Answer those phones

Calling during regular office hours and getting a voicemail message can be incredibly frustrating. In fact, a customer may just hang up and call someone else until they get a warm body on the phone – likely your competitor. Grab onto every potential customer that dials your number by having someone at the office to answer phones during regular hours or – if you’re a smaller operation – route the calls to your mobile phone when you leave.

Of course, there will always be times when you miss a call. Consider giving the caller an idea of when you’ll return their call. For instance, say something like “I’m sorry I couldn’t get to the phone, but I’ll return your call by the end of the business day.”

Go the extra mile

As a small business contractor, you do great work for every one of your clients. But sometimes there are opportunities to go above and beyond – to do that one small thing that doesn’t cost you much but makes life significantly easier for your client. Those memories of being treated with generosity stick in people’s minds, and they want to show their gratitude.

When you provide exceptional service to your clients, they’re more likely to spread the word. And you’re more likely to end up with new business. 

Be available

We live in a time of convenience. You can get an encyclopedia’s worth of information within seconds, and you can have a whole roomful of furniture delivered to your doorstep in less than 48 hours. Of course, customers expect a lot from their contractors – whether it’s wanting someone to come out at an odd time or asking questions after the job has been completed.

A brand and reputation that reflects helpfulness and availability will put you in a good position to build your business. When a former client (or one of their friends) has a problem, they’ll think of you first.
